Scaffolding has finally come down on the side of Saint Leonard’s church facing the Peace Garden – showing a new red Catholic cross. Excellent visibility from Hanover Street makes this new addition to the area an instant landmark, sure to boost the already high value of North End real estate. Repairs to the wall and the addition of the cross are part of a larger renovation project for the garden;  the new cross sits across from the mural painted by local artist Nathan Swain.

The mural, featuring verdant greenery in keeping with the Peace Garden overlook came first in the sprucing up of the area. Artist Swain explains: “I approached the church and I also talked to Frank the owner of Assagio. They both liked the idea of covering the blank ugly wall with something green. I had Boston Building Wraps print and install the banner.”

St. Leonard’s was the first Roman Catholic Church in New England built by immigrants from Italy, in 1873. It is located at the corner of Hanover and Prince Streets in the heart of the historic North End, just steps from the finest Boston waterfront properties.  St. Leonard’s is known for its Saint Anthony shrine in the downstairs church, the oldest shrine to the saint in Boston. The Peace Garden is known to all in the neighborhood and beyond as a peaceful retreat from the busy streets of the North End. A Mild Boston Winter

Due to the mild winter, many owners in the Waterfront / North End neighborhood have decided to put their properties on the market earlier than normal.   Even regardless of the unusually warm weather, the market appears to be getting stronger.  We have seen an influx of both motivated buyers and sellers in the marketplace of late. While typically New Englanders are battling the elements at this time of year, we have had the luxury of a mild winter, making it much easier for buyers to look at potential Boston waterfront properties and for sellers to showcase their homes.

At CL Waterfront Properties, we have a very positive outlook for the housing market in 2012, and urge sellers not to delay – put your home on the market as soon as possible!  Within just the first two weeks of the year, there have been ten new properties listed in the Waterfront / North End neighborhood, and there are currently seventeen properties that either have accepted offers or are under agreement. It’s an exciting time to be involved in luxury Boston real estate! For more information about the selling and listing prices for the Waterfront/North End in the near year, please contact Scott Accorsini today.

North End / Waterfront Reviews Zoning and Licensing Process

Zoning process revisited

At the January 12, 2012 NEWRA meeting held at the Nazzaro Community Center, there was a unanimous vote to revise the procedure for reviewing zoning and licensing applications for Boston waterfront properties. In the past the applicant needed to make a presentation in front of the full membership at monthly meetings. In a 28-0 vote, the association has agreed that it is not necessary to bring the matters of zoning or licensing in front of the entire membership if the issue does not raise community concerns.

Zoning and licensing matters have been the main focus of many of the NEWRA meetings in the past. With this revision, it will allow the membership to focus on other important issues that may surface in the community. Local businesses will also be saving time and money which would typically be allocated for community review. The zoning and licensing committee will continue to review all applications and enforce the neighbor notification policy.

To find out more about how this decision will impact the area, or to find out more about our available Boston Waterfront real estate, contact CL Waterfront Properties today.

Hazmat Truck Re-Routing Proposal

Filed under: Boston Waterfront Luxury Buildings, North End Boston, North End Luxury Condos, North End Waterfront Condos, Waterfront Boston. • Tags: , . By

Driving through Boston can be a tricky business – especially if you’re driving a truck carrying hazardous material. The fiery truck accident on Route 1 in Saugus in July made many people much more aware of the potential threat of a hazardous material truck accident in the city of Boston.

Hazmat Truck Accident in Saugus MA

Hazmat Truck Explosion on Route 1 in Saugus

Currently streets going through the North End – including Atlantic Ave., Commercial St., Cross St. and North Washington St. – experience 100+ hazmat trucks each day. The consequences of an accident as bad as the hazmat truck explosion in July would be disastrous in the city of Boston. Many concerned residents of the North End and Waterfront District attended the public hearing held at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s headquarters last week to voice their opinions regarding the re-routing of pass-through trucks from Boston streets to highways outside the city such as Route 128. Based upon the 182-page public safety analysis conducted by an independent, Ohio-based research company it has been strongly recommended that the trucks be re-routed to highways outside of the city. While the majority of city officials, including Mayor Menino, support the proposed re-routing of these pass-through hazmat trucks there is opposition from the trucking companies as a result of the increased time and cost that this re-routing would cause.

If you’re living in a North End apartment you should vote to have these trucks re-routed to highways outside of the city. In the upcoming weeks similar public hearings will be held in suburbs such as Quincy, Waltham and Stoneham. Additionally, residents and businesses can comment on the proposal via email at bostonhazmat@state.ma.us until September 23rd. To read the full article about the hazmat truck re-routing click here.

On July 27, the Saint Joseph Society, a charitable organization based in Boston’s North End, put on the Historic Unity Celebration.  This event was intended to pay homage to the cultures and traditions of the many ethnic groups that have immigrated through Boston’s North End and are now such a strong part of the Boston community.

Although Boston’s largest present-day Chinese population resides in Chinatown, many Chinese entered Boston via the North End. The program featured multiple Chinese dance and musical performances, including a guest dance appearance by one of Shanghai’s most acclaimed dancers!  See more here: http://www.northendwaterfront.com/home/2011/8/3/chinese-music-and-dance-at-the-historic-unity-celebration-in.html

Taste of the North End

Filed under: North End Amenities, North End Boston, North End Events, North End Luxury Condos, North End Waterfront Condos, Things to Do in Boston, Uncategorized. • Tags: , . By

Some of CL Waterfront’s North End residents got a “taste” of the neighborhood at the 17th annual event “Taste of the North End” last Friday, May 6.  The event was attended by over 700 people and featured foods from 37 different restaurants throughout the North End. Some of tTaste of the North Endhe restaurants including in the tasting were Ducali, Tresca, Lucca, Filippo, among many others.

For the first time in about ten years the event was brought back to the neighborhood for which it represents. In the past the “Taste of the North End” has been held at Saint John School, the Coast Guard base, and the New England Aquarium. This year local residents were pleased to see that the venue was much more open and had returned to its roots. The “Taste” annually raises funds for neighborhood charities, including the North End Waterfront Health Center. Throughout the past 17 years the event has raised over $1 million for these local charities – this year the event raised over $100,000.

The enthusiasm for this event and the North End neighborhood are obvious through the ongoing participation of local restaurants and the attendees who return every year. Included in these habitual “tasters” is State Representative, Aaron Michlewitz, who noted how important the event is for the community when he said, “It shows the uniqueness of our neighborhood and how many great restaurants we have and how many great things we have going on in the neighborhood.” This event truly is a tribute to the local businesses in the North End and a testimonial to its extraordinary community atmosphere.

North End BostonPerhaps you’re an empty-nester or just looking to make life a little easier by downsizing.  If so, then this is a great time to seize the moment and make the move to the North End/Waterfront, since interest rates are still at an all time low and the prices for condos are still lower. When choosing a location within the city, you will undoubtedly consider what makes a neighborhood most attractive.

Residing within walking distance of some of the city’s finest restaurants, theaters, sailing centers, universities and hospitals makes the Waterfront so very attractive.  Try taking cooking classes at a North End restaurant or a sailing class at the Boston Sailing Center.  The North Bennet Street School located in North End has been teaching craftsmanship for 125 years.  The school offers classes in Woodworking, Jewelry, Calligraphy, and Bookbinding just to mention a few.

Perhaps take a stroll over to Charlestown to visit the U.S.S. Constitution or Bunker Hill Monument.  Perhaps take a harbor walk along the Waterfront on a glorious day by stepping out your front door.

Glide to a Celtics or Bruins game and amble home in a matter of minutes.  There’s more enjoyment and gratification in entertaining your family and friends when all these sites can be visited without the use of an automobile. Boston’s Waterfront offers all this and much, much more.
