Statue of Paul Revere in the Prado in Boston's North End

Cyrus Dallin's Paul Revere Statue

Boston’s North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association will be hosting a public fair on April 29 from 12 – 4PM at the Paul Revere Mall on Hanover Street.  This fair is being held in honor of sculptor Cyrus Dallin, his Paul Revere Monument, and the Paul Revere Mall known to locals simply as The Prado, designed by Arthur Shurcliff and Henry Shepley.

The NEWRA will present a series of lectures on Dallin, Shurcliff, and others who were responsible for creating and preserving this local treasure, among the most visited and photographed sites in the nation.  Other historical presentations will focus on Paul Revere himself, and on the history of Boston’s North End neighborhood. Members of the Cyrus Dallin and Paul Revere families are scheduled to attend.

In addition, the Old North Church will host a related lecture on Thursday, May 17th at 7:00 PM providing more in-depth historical review and an opportunity for public discussion. The featured speaker will be Rebecca Reynolds, formerly of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, who specializes in American sculpture. Reynolds’ talk will focus on Dallin’s 58 year quest to erect his Paul Revere sculpture in Boston.

North End Community Hopes to Acquire Buildings for School Expansion

North End Eliot School family council Petition

Eliot School Petition at NEWNC - Feb 2012

Great news for families and community members in the North End, the Eliot elementary school is getting closer than ever before to some much needed expansion in their bid to acquire the North and Richmond Street buildings up for sale.

After spending some time in a marketing period and having two-dozen developers attend property tours of the real estate, no interest has been shown for housing purposes by any of the developers.  This is a good sign for those in favor of purchasing the property in the school’s best interest.

Acquiring the buildings would greatly improve the Eliot’s capacity to accommodate an ever-expansive community, especially with a waiting list larger than its current student body.

The school expansion will also benefit the community as a whole, giving more families a reason to stay in the city, not to mention Eliot has a great reputation of being one of the best public schools in Boston.

Much credit is given to Principal, Traci Walker Griffith, for bringing the school’s academic level and achievements to where it is today. During her tenure, the school has turned around and test scores have only gone up, while other schools in the Boston public school system have closed.  With more seats available to children at the Eliot can only mean good things for the North End and Boston.

Scaffolding has finally come down on the side of Saint Leonard’s church facing the Peace Garden – showing a new red Catholic cross. Excellent visibility from Hanover Street makes this new addition to the area an instant landmark, sure to boost the already high value of North End real estate. Repairs to the wall and the addition of the cross are part of a larger renovation project for the garden;  the new cross sits across from the mural painted by local artist Nathan Swain.

The mural, featuring verdant greenery in keeping with the Peace Garden overlook came first in the sprucing up of the area. Artist Swain explains: “I approached the church and I also talked to Frank the owner of Assagio. They both liked the idea of covering the blank ugly wall with something green. I had Boston Building Wraps print and install the banner.”

St. Leonard’s was the first Roman Catholic Church in New England built by immigrants from Italy, in 1873. It is located at the corner of Hanover and Prince Streets in the heart of the historic North End, just steps from the finest Boston waterfront properties.  St. Leonard’s is known for its Saint Anthony shrine in the downstairs church, the oldest shrine to the saint in Boston. The Peace Garden is known to all in the neighborhood and beyond as a peaceful retreat from the busy streets of the North End. North End / Waterfront Reviews Zoning and Licensing Process

Zoning process revisited

At the January 12, 2012 NEWRA meeting held at the Nazzaro Community Center, there was a unanimous vote to revise the procedure for reviewing zoning and licensing applications for Boston waterfront properties. In the past the applicant needed to make a presentation in front of the full membership at monthly meetings. In a 28-0 vote, the association has agreed that it is not necessary to bring the matters of zoning or licensing in front of the entire membership if the issue does not raise community concerns.

Zoning and licensing matters have been the main focus of many of the NEWRA meetings in the past. With this revision, it will allow the membership to focus on other important issues that may surface in the community. Local businesses will also be saving time and money which would typically be allocated for community review. The zoning and licensing committee will continue to review all applications and enforce the neighbor notification policy.

To find out more about how this decision will impact the area, or to find out more about our available Boston Waterfront real estate, contact CL Waterfront Properties today.

Wounded Warrior Project Fundraiser – Lucia’s Restaurant Jan. 19

Filed under: Battery Wharf, Boston Waterfront Luxury Buildings, North End Amenities, North End Boston, North End Events, North End Luxury Condos, North End Luxury Homes. • Tags: , . By

Lucia's Restaurant in the North End will be having a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project, Jan. 19.Lucia’s Restaurant, in the heart of Boston’s old North End, is hosting the “Wounded Warrior Project Fundraiser” on January 19, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The intent is to raise $15,000 for wounded soldiers returning from the front lines. Of equal importance, is to highlight the sacrifices made by those in military service.

Part of the fundraising event is a raffle for items including a signed Bruins jersey, signed Bruins hockey stick and a pair of tickets to a home game of the NHL Boston Bruins. Tickets for the raffle are already on sale at Mangia, Mangia restaurant and at the Hanover News. A silent auction is also planned. Appetizers are provided by Lucia’s Restaurant.

The authentic Italian eatery is within walking distance of some of Boston’s most treasured landmarks. One is the Paul Revere House, dating back to 1680 and home to that famed rider of the same name. Another is Old North Church, otherwise called Christ Church, built in 1723 and from which two strategically placed lanterns are credited with officially starting the American Revolution. It is the oldest Boston church still standing.

This historic part of the city is also home to some luxury Boston real estate. Within walking distance of Lucia’s is the brick and glass façade of Lincoln Wharf, a high-end 119-unit condominium offering luxurious surroundings and stunning waterfront views. Also nearby is Battery Wharf, offering one, two and three-bedroom condominiums on a coveted stretch of Boston waterfront real estate. The complex shares the wharf-side space with the Exhale Mind Body Spa, the upscale Aragosta Bistro and the Fairmont Battery Wharf Hotel.

Boston’s Old North End is also a draw for outdoor enthusiasts. Paul Revere Mall is in the center of the neighborhood and features an equestrian statue of the revolutionary, along with plaques dedicated to other Bostonians involved in the struggle. On the southern end, near even more examples of Boston luxury condos, is Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, opened in 1976 to celebrate the bi-centennial. It is the perfect place for an impromptu picnic or a stroll along the Harborwalk.

Record Turnout at Steriti Rink for Neighborhood Event

For the past four years, the North End Columbus Day Committee has hosted an Annual Santa Skate and Toy Drive at Steriti Rink in Boston’s North End.  This year was the most successful toy drive yet, with a record turn-out of skaters!  Toys from the event will be donated to the Italian Home for Children for holiday gifts this season.

Santa was in attendance, posing for photos!

The Italian Home for Children was founded in 1919 in response to the large number of Italian children in the North End that were left as orphans after the 1918 influenza epidemic.  The North End community and the its clergy established the home to provide care for the orphans.

Since then, the mission of the IHC has changed, and they now offer residential and day treatment services to at risk youth of all nationalities.

If you would like to contribute, but missed the event, you can still drop off toy donations at Saint Anthony’s Club at 203 Endicott Street.  If you want to make a monetary donation, you can donate to either the Franciscan Baby Center or the Italian Home for Children.  For more information, please contact Lois Strazzullo at strazz316@gmail.com.
