Wounded Warrior Project Fundraiser – Lucia’s Restaurant Jan. 19

Lucia's Restaurant in the North End will be having a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project, Jan. 19.Lucia’s Restaurant, in the heart of Boston’s old North End, is hosting the “Wounded Warrior Project Fundraiser” on January 19, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The intent is to raise $15,000 for wounded soldiers returning from the front lines. Of equal importance, is to highlight the sacrifices made by those in military service.

Part of the fundraising event is a raffle for items including a signed Bruins jersey, signed Bruins hockey stick and a pair of tickets to a home game of the NHL Boston Bruins. Tickets for the raffle are already on sale at Mangia, Mangia restaurant and at the Hanover News. A silent auction is also planned. Appetizers are provided by Lucia’s Restaurant.

The authentic Italian eatery is within walking distance of some of Boston’s most treasured landmarks. One is the Paul Revere House, dating back to 1680 and home to that famed rider of the same name. Another is Old North Church, otherwise called Christ Church, built in 1723 and from which two strategically placed lanterns are credited with officially starting the American Revolution. It is the oldest Boston church still standing.

This historic part of the city is also home to some luxury Boston real estate. Within walking distance of Lucia’s is the brick and glass façade of Lincoln Wharf, a high-end 119-unit condominium offering luxurious surroundings and stunning waterfront views. Also nearby is Battery Wharf, offering one, two and three-bedroom condominiums on a coveted stretch of Boston waterfront real estate. The complex shares the wharf-side space with the Exhale Mind Body Spa, the upscale Aragosta Bistro and the Fairmont Battery Wharf Hotel.

Boston’s Old North End is also a draw for outdoor enthusiasts. Paul Revere Mall is in the center of the neighborhood and features an equestrian statue of the revolutionary, along with plaques dedicated to other Bostonians involved in the struggle. On the southern end, near even more examples of Boston luxury condos, is Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, opened in 1976 to celebrate the bi-centennial. It is the perfect place for an impromptu picnic or a stroll along the Harborwalk.

Record Turnout at Steriti Rink for Neighborhood Event

For the past four years, the North End Columbus Day Committee has hosted an Annual Santa Skate and Toy Drive at Steriti Rink in Boston’s North End.  This year was the most successful toy drive yet, with a record turn-out of skaters!  Toys from the event will be donated to the Italian Home for Children for holiday gifts this season.

Santa was in attendance, posing for photos!

The Italian Home for Children was founded in 1919 in response to the large number of Italian children in the North End that were left as orphans after the 1918 influenza epidemic.  The North End community and the its clergy established the home to provide care for the orphans.

Since then, the mission of the IHC has changed, and they now offer residential and day treatment services to at risk youth of all nationalities.

If you would like to contribute, but missed the event, you can still drop off toy donations at Saint Anthony’s Club at 203 Endicott Street.  If you want to make a monetary donation, you can donate to either the Franciscan Baby Center or the Italian Home for Children.  For more information, please contact Lois Strazzullo at strazz316@gmail.com.

Unfortunately for many New England communities, “Old Man Winter” crashed the Halloween festivities, leaving millions without power and parents having to cancel trick or treating this year.  But not the North End.  Despite Jack Frost’s early visit, the North End community continued with the 2011 Halloween Parade, sponsored by the Madonna Della Cava Society and City of Boston Special Events, and strolled through the waterfront neighborhood streets with the Saint Alfio’s and NorthEast Italian Band leading the way and families of little ghouls and gals trailing behind.  The band trumpeted such classics as Mickey Mouse, When the Saints Come Marching in, and more!  The North End and Waterfront fun continued with inflatable bouncing entertainment, DJ music and family activities.

Boston is a city known the world over for its’ density of true historic and cultural landmarks. The North End, home to some of the city’s most charismatic businesses and residents and many of the architectural icons that define the urban landscape, boasts ten properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Step out the door of your North End condo and stroll through North Square – Mariner’s House, Pierce-Hichborn House, and Paul Revere’s House are all within a stone’s throw of one another.

Property values of North End real estate are kept strong by the proximity of historic structures such as St. Stephen’s Church on Hanover Street, gateway to the hustle and bustle of Government Center, and the Old North Church on Commercial Street, one of the most recognizable houses of worship in the country. Surrounded by still-standing reminders of the foundation of this country, North End condos make a great place to call home for those who relish in history and tradition.

5 Tileston Pl, Single Family Home for sale in North End Boston- Access by WalkwayOriginal article by June Albritton of Boston Homes Magazine

Rare Single-Family Home for Sale in Boston’s North End

Carmela Laurella of CL Waterfront Properties LLC is marketing a special property at 5 Tileston Place, a pretty courtyard off of Tileston Street in Boston’s North End Neighborhood, accessible only by foot or bike.

Tileston Street is a short road filled with local history, that starts at Salem Street near the Old North Church and ends on Hanover Street, near St. Stephen’s Church. It runs parallel to the Paul Revere Mall, where the famous statue of Paul Revere on his horse is located.

It is rare to fine a single-family home in the North End, but this is one of them. This home has three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, an eat-in kitchen, granite counter-tops, a gas cook surface, a family room, a large utility and storage room, architect-designed storage cabinets, a balcony and a roof deck. The list price is $995,000.

Celebrity Sightings on Quiet Private Lane

The present owner says he often sees athletes with the Boston Bruins or the Boston Celtics in the neighborhood, and he has seen the Stanley Cup many times. He also sees famous movie stars who visit the North End when they are in town. But, he says that even when there is a saint’s feast parade on Hanover Street, it is quiet and private on his lane.

A cast iron decorative gate marks the location of Tileston Place a few doors down Tileston Street, near Hanover Street. The brick walls and clapboard residences around it block excessive noise and provide a pleasant respite from the activity of the North End.

5 Tileston Pl North End Boston Home cast iron gate to private entrancePavers and light colored brick cover the ground. Gardens outline some of the buildings and planters fill in other areas. Hostas, miniature boxwoods, ornamental grasses, a Japanese maple and other plants soothe the spirit. At the end opposite the gate on Tileston Street is the brick wall of Paul Revere Mall.

Completely Renovated in 2000

In 1998 a developer sought permission to remodel 5 Tileston Place and replaced the wiring and plumbing, added recessed lighting to the public rooms, put on a new roof and made the home almost like new when it was completed in 2000.

He also added a second wood- frame clapboard building next door that contains two condominiums. These are the only three residences on Tileston Place.

Two entrance doors, each with its own stoop, face the courtyard. The one closer to Tileston Street is the formal front entrance. The second, just as in the suburbs, opens to the kitchen.

Through the front door a shallow storage closet gives space to hang coats. Beyond it, a staircase leads to the upper floors, and down the hall, stairs descend to the family room and the utility room. To the right from the front door a wide doorway opens to the living room.
